Deeply disappointed. No bees. The beekeeper is too busy to deliver them on Friday. He has a five o’clock meeting he has to attend in London so there’s no time to swing by here first.

All the bulbs I planted for their arrival will be over by then.

I was telling my mother all of this, bemoaning that strangely crushing disappointment of waiting patiently for someone or something only to have hope dashed at the last minute. It’s such an ordinary sort of sadness, that of expectations not met. And as I was moaning on about this, looking out into the garden from the kitchen, the purple of all that honesty and the lilacs coming out glowing in the dark evening gloom, a sparrowhawk swooped in after a great tit. A fighter pilot in suburbia dodging fence panels. I’ve never seen a sparrowhawk here before. So furious and fast and then that strange silence when all the small birds go into hiding. I wonder if it will return?
